OVERVIEW

During the Coronavirus, unable to leave homes, see friends, continue on with everyday life, staying physically and mentally healthy has proved to be difficult for many. In particular, this has been extremely challenging for refugees and asylum seekers. Therefore, we founded Healthy @ Home in order to improve the physical, emotional, and social well-being of this community through the provision of accessible fitness equipment and online health related programs.

fundraising

The largest restrictions preventing refugees and asylum seekers from accessing exercise include their lack of equipment, coaching, and experience. Thus, we first fundraised a total of over $3,000 for the purchasing of fitness equipment and the hosting of our fitness programs.

RECRUITMENT OF SPORTING PROFESSIONALS

To host our five days' worth of sporting programs, we worked with different sporting professionals who hosted lessons through Zoom. These sporting professionals included:

  • Andy Service- Former sailing Olympian

  • Emma Thurbon- Rugby player and coach

  • Michelle- Yoga Instructor

DISTRIBUTION OF FITNESS EQUIPMENT

For this program, we worked with RUN Hong Kong, an NGO dedicated to the rehabilitation of refugees and asylum seekers. Through them, we were able to connect with the refugee community and distribute our equipment.

HOSTING OF FITNESS SESSIONS

Our five day series of fitness challenges included a wide range of activities. Through the hosting and invitation of such a diverse group of fitness trainers, we hoped that we could provide the refugees and asylum seekers a wide range of activities and sports through which they will become inspired to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
