Asylum Action: a student-led organisation challenging the Hong Kong community to step into the shoes of a refugee

OUR MISSION

Refugees in Hong Kong are expected to live on $40 HKD a day for food and $10 HKD a day for transport, which, to most of us, is equivalent to a sandwich and an MTR journey. In the fast-paced and expensive metropolitan city of Hong Kong, it is almost impossible to manage with such finances. Here at Asylum Access, we hope to:

  1. Raise awareness for the challenges experienced by refugees and asylum seekers on a day to day basis

  2. Raise funds for the Refugee Union and other non-profit organization working within the community in Hong Kong

  3. Provide and support for refugees and asylum seekers where possible

What does having $1,250 HKD a month for food mean?

It is oftentimes extremely difficult to visualize numbers, figures, and statistics, and the same goes for understanding the difficulties experienced by a refugee or asylum seeker in Hong Kong-based on the finances that are given to them by the government.

Step into the Shoes of a Refugee provides participants an opportunity to experience the day to day struggles of a refugee.

HEALTHY AT HOME

Staying healthy at home during the duration of the Coronavirus has definitely been difficult for many, especially the refugee community of Hong Kong. With limited space, equipment, and knowledge, many refugees and asylum seekers could not maintain a healthy lifestyle even if they wanted to.

Asylum Action worked with several NGOs and fitness professionals, fundraising for the purchasing and distributing of basic fitness equipment and leading at home fitness courses via Zoom.
